NCTE (National Council for Teacher Education) – Compliance & Information

the statutory body responsible for maintaining norms, standards, and quality in
teacher education across India. As a recognized and approved teacher education

1. What is NCTE?
The NCTE is a statutory body of the Government of India
established under the National Council for Teacher Education Act, 1993 (Act No.

Its primary objective is to achieve planned and coordinated development of the
teacher education system throughout the country, to regulate and maintain norms
and standards in teacher education, and to perform functions connected

2. Scope & Regulatory Role
Under the Act, NCTE is empowered to:
- Lay
down guidelines in respect of minimum qualifications for persons to

down norms for teacher-education programmes including eligibility,

3. Norms & Recognition Process
Institutions offering teacher education programmes (like
B.Ed, D.El.Ed etc.) must be recognised by the NCTE or operate under its
approved norms.

the “Recognition, Norms and Procedure” Regulations issued by NCTE (e.g.,

4. Why this is Important for DIET Karbi Anglong

6. Recent Developments
- In
June 2025, NCTE announced withdrawal of recognition of around 2,962
teacher‐education institutions across
India for failing to comply with mandatory PAR submission under Section 17

Public Consultation)”, which will further strengthen and revise norms for
